Sydney so far

We’ve been on the road for about two months now! I can hardly believe all the places we’ve been to and all the places on our list we have yet to see. We are currently in Sydney and well … it’s love at first sight. Mostly, I’m just becoming more comfortable being uncomfortable with my surroundings, but Sydney makes it easy. Everyone is pleasant and nice, public transportation is a dream, our apartment is in a really hip neighbourhood, and the weather has been sunny but not deathly hot on avg.

Here’s a sampling of my favourite things about Sydney so far:

#1. Our Neighbourhood. We are staying in the Newtown area. It is too cool and hip for me. The area has recently been gentrified, so it still has a bit of the edge of a tough neighbourhood, but it’s full of sweet little shops and delicious cafes. My favourite thing is all the street art in our neighbourhood. Nearly every free wall is covered with something arty.

At a cute cocktail bar that serves tea based drinks *swoon*. My favourite bar ever. I’m drinking a “knitted sweater”.

#2. OMG Da BEACH! We went to Bondi Beach. It was super busy, super big, and super beautiful. We hung out on the beach until we got bored and hot then we went for lunch at a lovely rooftop patio … where I drank too much. We ended the beach day by sloshing (I sloshed John walked) around the coastal beach walk. AND I didn’t get eaten by a shark!

#3. Sydney CBD. We went downtown (downtown) and to the Sydney waterfront where all the cool tourist junk is. Sydney Opera house, Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Botanical Gardens to name a few of the spots we visited. We also checked out the downtown market!

I think this is just the back of the Opera House. We are going back for a show so I’ll get better pictures!

That’s it for my top things. Other things to note: bugs are really big here, I seen a fruit fly the size of my fist (apprx.). Birds are loud. There is one that sounds like a screaming goat child. Crocodiles are not as big of a problem as TV lead me to believe. Nor are snakes (praise cheezus).

Things we are looking forward to: Christmas! Our lovely friend Morgan invited us to his family xmas party. New Years! They have brochures about their fireworks. It’s kind of a big deal I guess. Opera House! We haven’t picked a show yet, but we are going 🙂 Other things! Yet to be decided.
