Marseille: Frioul Island Adventure

Lets talk about that Island adventure! We took a short ferry ride over to Frioul Island near Marseille. It has some people living on it and a couple restaurants to enjoy, but mostly it’s all about the hiking around the hills and beaches. Frioul Island is also home to old German barracks, as the Nazis occupied the island in WW2. Some of the structures on the island were built in the early 19th century for military and trading purposes, but have been restructured in the war since then.

We watched little sailors learn to sail while we had lunch.

We found these ominous cross structures on a hill. They’re part of an unfinished Nazi building, but currently look more like a memorial or grave.

One of the other islands nearby is Chateau d’if, an old prison. It’s also where the Count of Monte Cristo was filmed! Unfortunately we couldn’t visit that island because it was to windy to dock.

The Hôpital Caroline was closed for construction/repairs during our visit, but we could walk around it a little. It was used in the 19th century as a stopover for sailors and a quarantine to protect the busy city and port of Marseille from various plagues.

Whelp I think that’s it for Marseille. I definitely have more to say on what we experienced there, but I’m not exactly sure how to say the things. All of it was wonderful. I particularly enjoyed that it’s a very lived in city, other places we’ve been to or will go to have become such big tourist attractions that they lose the flavour of the people who live, work, and die within the city.

Note: I made some fun updates to dis blogo. You can now see all the cats I see on the Cats of Europe page.
