Down in Split-i-mo

Alternative Fact: In the original version of the Beach Boys’ hit song Kokomo they sang “Split-i-mo.” The whole song was originally meant to be an homage to cities around the Adriatic, but due to some inter-band drama they decided to make the song for a more American audience. To this day the Beach Boys are still conflicted about their choice.

Another incredibly magical city in Croatia along the Adriatic Sea. I’m so so grateful that we’ve been able to see so many beautiful places. Will I ever be sick of the picturesque views 24/7? Unlikely, but I will let you know.

We stayed in Split for two weeks at the end of December in a cozy little apartment in the old part of the city. I loved walking through the streets, along the water, and so many other things.

Here’s a list of my very favourite things we did and saw in Split.

Warm weather and palm trees.

I mean who wouldn’t love warm weather in November! It started to get a bit chilly and rainy towards the end of the month but still like low of +10C.

A Sorcerer?!

Nope, a statue of Gregory of NinHe did some stuff and is now a super cool big statue on the edge of the walls of Split.

Remember to rub his toe for good luck.

The old part of the city.

We stayed in the old town of Split, which was super cool because we got to live in these incredible ancient walls along the weird winding walking streets.

View from our apartment.

Diocletian’s Palace.

If you like Roman ruins you’ll really like this one. The exterior is incredible and they have the former basement open to walk through.

Note: Diocletian’s Palace basement is also where DRAGONS LIVE!

Also, most of this GOT scene from season 4, episode 4 was filmed in the basements and around Split.

Of course, the real history of the Palace, Split, and the Roman Emperor Diocletian is just as interesting and exciting as Game of Thrones.

Split has cats too.

We didn’t see as many as in Dubrovnik, but we still found a few.

There’s a big hill for us to climb.

A hill full of interesting things and incredible views. We climbed through a bunch of the hill in Park Suma Marjan.

Christmas markets started while we were in Split!

The city becomes wonderfully decorated. Along the waterfront little booths were built to serve various snacks and lots of boozey drinks.

“Ancona, Rijeka, ooh I wanna take ya
Rimini, Bari, come on pretty mama
San Marino, Montenegro,
baby why don’t we go,
Durres in Albania”

Split is great and I recommend it for everyone to visit! Onwards to Zagreb, our final stop in Croatia.
